Concept Renault ZEO EV benefits from Formula E

19 April 2017

FIA Formula E has just released a video showing the Renault ZOE e-Sport Concept two-seater with a Formula E single-seater — the links being Renault and the two Formula E motors that power this hot hatch.

Much of its development has been inspired by technologies developed by engineers at Renault Sport Racing and the Renault e.dams which is currently dominating the FIA Formula E Championship – the world’s premier electric racing category.
The pocket rocket has two engines using high capacity permanent magnet technology to achieve a total power of 340 kW, or around 460 hp. The power output is vastly greater than that used Formula E (which equivalent to 270 bhp). Just like the Renault e.dams FE car, an air and water cooling system with front-mounted radiator is used to make sure that the battery and control systems operate at the ideal temperature.

It will accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.2 seconds with 130 mph reached in under 10 seconds. In just a few tenths of a second its motors reach 4300 rpm and acceleration is linear, uninterrupted by gear changes.
It features a tubular steel chassis built by TORK Engineering that’s based on those used by Renault Sport cars competing in bill climbs and ice racing, “double-triangle” suspension at the front and rear, 20-inch wheels and Ohlins “four-way” adjustable shock absorbers, similar to those selected for the Renault Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R. These together with a lowered ride height and wider track provide the car with ultimate performance on the circuit.

The ZOE’s cockpit includes two Recaro bucket seats with racing harnesses and Formula E style controls such as a rectangular steering wheel.

“The brief for the Renault ZOE e-sport concept couldn’t have been simpler: ‘Have fun!’” said Stéphane Janin, Renault’s Concept car design director. “So we came up with something midway between a production model and a racing car. It’s perfect for lovers of extreme driving sensations!”

“At Renault, we believe that electric cars are capable of addressing the needs of all types of customers, with the emphasis on driving enjoyment,” said Éric Feunteun, director, electric vehicle programme. “The Renault ZOE e-sport concept is a stunning expression of this!”

The futuristic car further underlines Renault’s commitment to the ongoing development of electric vehicles.
