Volkswagen celebrates TCR entry with new GTI

11 May 2018

Volkswagen has previewed what it describes as a ‘new chapter of Golf GTI history’ with the unveiling of its new GTI TCR, the most potent Golf GTI ever. The model, which is as displayed a concept, but is confirmed for production later this year.

The new car was revealed at the legendary GTI meeting at Reifnitz am Wörthersee, and has been created to mark the German brand’s manufacturer participation in the international TCR series. VW says that the new car follows the doctrine of the series, with the 370 Nm tubocharged engine putting its power to the front wheels from1,600 rpm through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a locking differential. The TCR is also set to be the fastest GTI with a top speed of 165 mph once the limiter has been removed.

There are lots of individual features which combine to form the particularly sporty character of the new Volkswagen. The TCR version will leave the Wolfsburg plant with 18-inch “Belvedere” forged wheels or 19-inch alloy wheels will available as an option. Behind the large wheels there is a high performance braking system with perforated discs that decelerate the production car just as effortlessly as the TCR racing car. The top Golf GTI model also features two extra radiators to ensure sufficient cooling for high engine performance.

There is also an additional pack aimed at particularly enthusiastic drivers, which includes an even more dynamic sports chassis as well as adaptive chassis control. On the outside, its looks will be revised, with a newly designed front bumper with a sharply contoured splitter, as well as a newly design panel attachment on the side which joins a diffuser and exhaust system tailpipes.
